This week’s Broke and Bookish Top Ten Tuesday is the ten books I’d like to read with my book club. I’m not going to name ten, mostly because I love the surprise element of book club, so I try not to think too much about what books might be coming up this year. With that in mind, I’m going to list five books I’d love someone to pick, and five of my favourites from the ones we’ve already done.
Five I’d Like Us to Read:
- Wild by Cheryl Strayed – I’ve been hearing so many great things about this, and from what I can tell, it would have some good talking points
- Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor – I suspect some of the book club girls may have a bit of a prejudice against YA novels, so I’d love them to read something fantastic to change their minds
- All the Birds Singing by Evie Wyld – I just finished this book yesterday and I really need to talk about it with people. I would particularly like someone to explain all of the loose ends that were never resolved
- Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel – I want to read this so bad, but I’ve already bought a lot of books this year, and it’s not even February. But, if someone was so kind as to choose it for book club, well, what choice would I have 😉
- Yes Please by Amy Poehler – just in case there’s someone in book club who doesn’t realise how awesome Amy is.
Five of the Best that we Have Read:
- The Wife Drought by Annabel Crabb – this book produced an incredibly organic, free-flowing discussion, which is unusual for a book that everyone loved. We’ve found that the best discussions come when there are some dissenters in the group, but this one raised so many interesting points and issues that we could have talked about it for hours
- Where’d you go Bernadette? by Maria Semple – although it was a fairly superficial book, everyone enjoyed it, but for completely different reasons, and everyone had lots to say
- The Slap by Christos Tsiolkas – this was a great choice, not just because we had the most amazing Greek meal, but also because we were able to marvel at Tsiolkas’s insane ability to fill a book with hateful characters, but still have you wanting more
- The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald – again, not just because we had an amazing themed meal and cocktails, and also not just because this was the first binge drinking club masquerading as book club, well ok, for all of those reasons
- In Cold Blood by Truman Capote – although this is my most hated of all the books we’ve read, it really divided opinions, which made for some excellent discussion (and when I say discussion, I mean violent dissing, mostly by me!)
Your turn – what books would you like to read with a book club?

I’ve read a couple on your list of books you’d like to read, they definitely create enough talking points for a good book club conversation. Good choices. – ashley

All these books are new to me but I do love the covers and by the sound of it, they really seem interesting.

Awesome list! I like that we both have ‘In Cold Blood’ in our list. I suggested ‘The Great Gasby’ (don’t really like the book) but my friends didn’t want to discuss it because they didn’t like it as well. Oh there’s a ‘Wild’ movie starring Reese Witherspoon so I might read the book first before watching the movie. I’ll check out the reviews of other books. Thanks for sharing your list.

In Cold Blood was a great one to discuss because there are so many things in it that are controversial and interesting. Especially when you couple it with watching the movie Capote – although I’m glad I read the book first, as I would have hated it even more if I’d seen the movie first I think.

You should definitely try and find some like-minded friends and start a book club – it can be SO much fun!

Daughter of Smoke and Bone would be a fantastic introduction to brilliant YA fantasy. I’d also go with The Knife of Never Letting Go – that would be a great intro to YA sci-fi/dystopia. 🙂
Check out my TTT.

I really want to read Wild as well, I just saw the trailer to the movie. And I adored Yes Please! Daughter of Smoke and Bone is still on my to-read list, I should really read that one soon. And Station Eleven as well 🙂
I don’t think I could ever hold a discussion about The Great Gatsby as the book frustrated me to no end. It was the first classic that I chose to read and I hated it. It has made me kind of wary to read others as well.
Great list!

Yeah I didn’t love The Great Gatsby either, although I really enjoyed the movie. But I can totally imagine how it would put you off reading other classics.

I haven’t actually seen the movie! I’m going to try and read about 2 classics this year, maybe I’ll find one that I actually like 😀

The movie was MUCH better than the book – Leo and Baz Luhrmann are a winning combination. Good luck with the classics – have you tried Jane Eyre or Pride and Prejudice?

As much as I hated it, I can definitely see why In Cold Blood is a good book club book!

Haha, I love the comment you make for Tsiolkas and hateful characters that you can’t help but [maybe] root for in some weird way. I didn’t read The Slap, but I have read Barracuda, and boy did I hate that protagonist through 120% of the book (but still wanted all the best for him–what the heck, right?). But I have heard that the book brings out some amazing discussions; even if its slanted towards the negative spectrum.
Cheers,

I was exactly the same in Barracuda. The main guy was such a massive jerk, but I was totally rooting for him, and thought the book was amazing!

I knooooooooow–I felt like my feelings were being toyed with the entire time.
Side story: if there’s one thing for certain, Barracuda just reinforced might dislike the name Daniel/Danny/Dan Kelly/Kellerman because two books had characters with those exact names. Both of which were dubious to root for.
